kimiI was raised by a "Dog-Crazy" family. I was born as a pal for the family Collie named Kimi. Through the years our family has had a variety of dogs. A Finnish Spitz named Kelmi . Tiki & Taku, They were a pair of mixed breeds, Maltese and toy poodle. And a Pembroke Corgi named Maksi. In addition to breeding Glens I have bred Dandie Dinmonts for about 10 years. Our floors have also been swept clean by a Cesky Terrier named Fifu, and a Scottish Deerhound named Teo.

kelmiI was introduced to the Glen in 1987 when I was looking for a companion for my Dandie. There were a few thing I decided I needed in this new dog. It had to have a long tail!?!?!?!? At that time their was a discussion regarding banning the cutting of tails. The coat had to be trim able and the dog had to have presence. It had to be a dog that could think and solve problems by itself, not just follow commands. So it had to be a terrier!

When I was picking up my first Glen, Daisy, from Annette Anderson in Sweden my mind was made up. This dog seemed and actually felt even more comfortable than those representatives in the few dog books I had seen. These dogs appeared o be smart , but so goofy at the same time. It came to say hello with joy, but continued to do her own things sniffing and stuff. The next minute she was doing spins on the front lawn which got our full attention. And she got even more excited when she saw we were laughing a her. This was the dog , my heart was sold.

daisyAs I started to say I saw my first Glen when I went to pick up my first own Glen. Glen Stars Dansing Daisy aka Daisy. I spent a few days with Annette getting a crash course in Glens. I left Annette's with tons of information and new contacts. Liz Gay was one of those contacts. I wrote to Liz and told her I wanted a Glen that looked like Eversly Patrick, the most handsome dog I had ever seen. After about six months, there were two Glens at my home, Daisy, and Madach Jack Snipe aka Erik. .. I was now hooked I had that mad Glen disease.

corgiMy goal as a breeder is to breed Glens that meet the Glen description described in the standard with good health and character.. All Glens owned or bred by me weather they are used for breeding or not are examined for PRA. Every new Glen owner commits to bring their dog to PRA Exam Clinics when signing the contract. Another important goal for me is to find the right families for my Glens.. The most important feature is trust and easy communication between me and the new Glen owners. After a "connection" is found, the right puppy has to be found for the family. I keep contact with the new families throughout the Glens life and even after that !

pennutI have been very active in the "Dog world" but lately other things have been dragging me to other areas of interest. I am among other things founding member of the Finnish Glen Club and EFG FInland, for many years I was the Chairman of the Finnish Glen Club. I am also a member of the Finnish Terrier Association, Finnish Breeders Club, Society for Canine Genetic Health and Ethics. And a member of the Finnish Kennel Club.

Leena Glans

Friends tell about Leena PDF Print E-mail

I became acquainted with Leena through telephone for the first time about 15 years ago. It was about dog and bitch getting to do "it" of course. The dogs, she wanted to use for her bitch, ownership was just recently changed to me, but Leena couldn}t know that. She had called to latter owner, who the directed her to call me. Due to the mixup, we had to discuss a little longer and so our long friendship got its start. It didn}t take many months that I put the kids to the car and drove to Laukkoski for a visit. Usage of the telephone was abundant so the bills were huge. After taking one Glen from Leena, visits came more and more frequent. We ran between shows and were active members in Finnish Glens, Leena as a club chairman and me as a club secretary.

As a breeder Leena is very responsible, goal-directed and equipped with common sense. You can see the responsibility as constant battle against the breeds infirmities arranging several PRA scans per year and bringing constantly new breeding material to the country. Goal- directiveness can been seen in persistent breeding. Her thoughts are always atleast five years ahead planning different combinations or thinking if there is enough material to go that far or do we need more material. This kind of long term planning is one important similarity in our work. We have seen finnish glenn base from the beginning and what has became out of different combinations, thats one of the advantages we have. Leena has unbelievable wide archive for world glenns to help. There is over 2000 glens familytrees on that archive, which helps me with my breeding work. It is so comforting to call Leena when thinking of some combination and ask her opinion and if it is too closely related to each other. Both comes rather quickly, well Leena is Leena.

Common Sens comes to play when looking Leenas relationship to the Glenn. Glenn isn´t a easy breed, beeing a terrier and yet a primitive breed. Leenas Glens know their place in the "food chain" ( this doesnt mean that they are not loved fully by her). The goal is to keep Glen durable, independent mutt. Glens structure has to endure living and breeding has to happen as naturally as possible.

It is immense luck and joy to have such a breeder for a friend, with whom we have shared will be sharing joys and sorrows of finnish glenns. And best of all, friendship will prevail even if Glens would run out from the world.

Best wishes from your good friend

About ten years ago I was looking for a good male Glen to bring into the states. I was pointed in the direction of Leena Glans. I guess you can say the rest is history. I think I wrote her and she had a male available. Marfidal Lusty Lovelace (what a name) we called him Scully. That's how our friendship started.

Leena is someone I always talk to when planning a breeding. She looks at the whole picture when planning a breeding. Always thinking about the future. Leena has managed to acquire many much needed bloodlines. Which is very important in our very small gene pool. She gets the idea that breeders should not just breed for the present , but expand their vision so we can develop a healthy gene pool.

Over the years our friendship has become more of a sisterhood which I cherish. I consider Leena and Reijo and Oona a part of my family and I know she holds my family close to her heart.

Don't ask Leena a question if you really don't want to hear the truth. Because the truth is what you are going to get.

I consider Marfidal Kennel's to have the best Glens in the world.
